To assist in providing quality patient care in a manner which is patient-focused, technically appropriate, and cost
effective. The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse in
accordance with the Standards of Practice and within the guidelines of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. CST is
responsible for establishing and maintaining a sterile field, a safe patient care environment, and appropriate
supplies/equipment as required for the operative procedure. The CST functions as a cooperative health care team
member in a critical care environment treating the patient in a holistic manner with dignity and respect. Performs
specific duties and procedures in the treatment and care of patients in order to assist the surgical team. Serve as a scrub
tech as primary duty to the patient . Works under the direction of the RN. Performs specific duties in assisting the
Physician in Gastroenterology procedures. This includes cleaning and processing the scopes following measures to
ensure that it is done correctly. Performs specific duties working in Central Service cleaning and sterilizing instruments.
This includes following manufacturers instructions and AAMI guidelines.
High school diploma or equivalent •2 years OR scrub experience or equivalent Certifications:
CPR certified. •Certified Surgical Technologist certification will be obtained by the employee by sitting for the certification exam within 12 months of employment.
-Completely prepares sterile field in a timely manner; maintains the sterile field and boundaries prior to and during
-Complies with departmental policy and procedures regarding specimens, counts, and disposition of contaminated
-Assists the physician by sponging, suctioning, retracting, and cutting suture as required and instructed by the
-Acts as preceptor, sharing knowledge in a supportive/educational manner.
-Maintains on-call availability.
-Assists in emergency situations as assigned, demonstrating appropriate actions and prioritizing to meet patient's
-Maintains a safe work environment according to regulatory agency standards.
-Anticipates the needs of the physician as demonstrated by having all items required readily available on the sterile
-Participates in the surgical Time Out and does not allow the procedure to continue until all team members agree.
Responsible for the preparation of the surgical field and supplies/instruments delivered to the field. (35 %)
-Verifies instrument/supply/equipment available and ready per physician preference card.
-Verifies specific needs of physician by completely reading scrub tips.
-Assists in opening sterile supplies and instruments.
-Assists with clean up and turnover upon completion of case.
-Efficiently utilizes supplies to avoid waste and decrease costs.
In collaboration with health care team, assists in providing for a cooperative work environment. (15 %)
-Assists with maintaining the established goals of Surgical Services and Advocate BroMenn Medical Center
-Shares clinical and professional knowledge in a supportive/educational manner.
-Demonstrates self-direction in utilizing work time appropriately.
-Accepts and completes team responsibilities as assigned.
-Informs appropriate party of changes to the physician preference cards.
-Ensures proper instrument and equipment function; tagging and reporting any broken or malfunctioning
equipment/instruments to supervisor.
Responsible for compliance with hospital policies and procedures. (5 %)
-Maintains patient confidentiality.
-Utilizes Standards of Behavior ( Behaviors of Excellence) with members of health care team and patients.
-Promotes a culture of patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested
in safety initiatives.
-Acts as patient advocate to ensure patient welfare by collaborating with physicians and the health care team.
Responsible for maintenance of professional growth. (5 %)
-Demonstrates self-direction in maintaining professional skills.
-Independently completes assignments/projects.
