Basic Purpose

The Sr. Decision Sciences Manager, Insights and Analytics, is responsible for providing decision support across multiple business functions, in partnership with Business Analysts in the Insights and Analytics organization. Will leverage their in-depth knowledge of mathematical and statistical modeling techniques and innovative /quantitative analytical approaches to develop ‘test-and-learn’ approaches that align with the business’s larger objectives, facilitate the drawing of conclusions, and make actionable recommendations that answer business objectives. Will also implement best practices around research, analytics and measurement. Key to the success of the Sr. Decision Sciences Manager role is the ability to extract, manipulate, and synthesize data (e.g., attributes, transactions, behaviors, etc.), segmentation models, and other relevant information to draw conclusions and make recommendations resulting in implementable strategies. Additionally, will directly supervise the work of less experienced Decision Sciences Managers and Senior Decision Sciences Analysts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Analytics and Solution Development

  • Leads methodology development and implementation to deliver analyses and recommendations that enable business functions to make informed decisions

  • Leverages business/analytical knowledge to participate in discussions with cross-functional teams to understand and collaborate on business objectives and influence solution strategies

  • Applies innovative and scientific/quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make actionable recommendations that answer business objectives

  • Identifies and gathers the relevant and quality data sources required to fully answer and address the problem for the recommended strategy through testing or exploratory data analysis

  • Integrates and manipulates disparate data sources and determines the appropriate data hygiene techniques to apply

  • Thoroughly documents assumptions, methodology, validation, and testing

  • Understands and adopts emerging technology that can affect the application of scientific methodologies and/or quantitative analytical approaches to problem resolutions

  • Delivers analysis/findings in a manner that conveys understanding, garners support for recommendations, drives business decisions, and influences business strategy

Strategy, Process and Tools

  • Identify and develop analytics to support and measure strategies for business partners

  • Influence and evangelize analytical methodologies to support business partners’ needs

  • Identify opportunities to standardize processes through analytics and tools

  • Support integration of strategies, analytics, processes, and tools

  • Develop and refine core best practices to enhance the influence of Insights & Analytics across the organization

  • Serve as SME on customer data, segmentations, and data assets


Available for occasional travel as business requires (less than 5% of time)


Direct supervision of up to 3 Decision Sciences Managers or Senior Decision Scientists


  • Reports directly to Sr. Director, Decision Sciences

  • Works closely with:

  • Marketing

  • Category Management

  • IT (Business Analysts)

  • Local and National Sales

  • CookBook Team

  • Quantitative Methods Team

  • Insights and Analytics Team

  • Interacts occasionally with:

  • Senior management (VPs, Directors)


Education / Training

  • Graduate degree in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, or related quantitative field required

Related Experience

  • 8+ years of demonstrated successful experience in statistical or data science roles

  • 8+ years of demonstrated successful statistical modeling experience in food distribution, retail, CPG, or related industries with large datasets and transactional data

  • 5 years demonstrated successful experience managing direct reports

  • Strong statistical background with hands-on and leadership experience in:

  • Generalized linear modeling techniques (e.g., linear regression, logistic regression)

  • Time series analysis

  • Mixed modeling

  • Clustering

  • Factor analysis

  • Decision tree (e.g., CHAID and CART)

  • Survival analysis

  • Design of experiments

  • Leveraging extremely large data sets, preferably in a cloud-based environment

  • Integrating and manipulating data from multiple sources

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (e.g., Update presentations; Create graphs, tables and other data visualization techniques)

  • Microsoft Word

  • SAS

  • Regression techniques

  • Statistical segmentation techniques

  • Data querying methodologies and languages (e.g., SQL)

  • Developing ability to code in open source languages

  • Developing advanced skill set in:

  • Python

  • R

  • Snowflake/Redshift or other related cloud-based data warehouse environments

  • Hadoop

  • Spark

  • Developing knowledge of other data/text mining and preparations tools (e.g., Alteryx, Talend)

  • Proficiency or actively developing knowledge of at least one of the following a plus:

  • Oracle

  • MS Access

  • Machine learning
