Respiratory Therapist

Location: Methodist Campus

Shift-Multiple shifts available: 0.9- 36 hours per week: 7P-A, 7A-7P and 3P-11:00P

Summary:

As a health care professional, the incumbent is responsible for, but not limited to, managing the processes involved in performing respiratory therapy, ventilator management, ECG, oxygen administration and airway management.

Tuition Reimbursement of $3000/year (up to $6000 total).

1.Employee must be employed as a 0.1 FTE (8 hours per week

2.Employee must stay 2 years after they complete their coursework

3.No tenure requirement for the tuition reimbursement

4.Tuition will be repaid as long as the Student gets a C or better in the class.

5.Proof of grades is required for the repayment to be sent.

6.Student will sign the special tuition reimbursement agreement at the time of offer for CRT/RRT position.

7.Will also be required to apply for tuition reimbursement for each semester of class until they graduate.

Loan Forgiveness of $6000.

1.Students will begin receiving $115.39 on each paycheck after transfer into the CRT or RRT job title.

2.Must stay employed in the CRT/RRT position for 2 years in order to receive the entire $6000 in loan forgiveness.

3.Student will sign a promissory note at the time of offer for CRT/RRT position that will lock in the Loan Forgiveness for after graduation.

PERFORMS PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES TO INCLUDE ALL FORMS OF RESPIRATORY THERAPY, NON-INVASIVE CARDIOLOGY, AND OTHER ASSIGNED DUTIES UTILIZING APPLICABLE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.

  • Accurately interpret and execute physician ordersDemonstrates the ability to individualize therapy to meet the patient's need

  • Demonstrates the ability to anticipate the patient needs

  • Demonstrates the ability to calculate medication dosages

  • Performs patient educationPerforms all duties in an efficient and timely manner

  • Notify leader of respiratory care, nursing supervisor, or unit leader of any inappropriate patient care issues

  • Document all medication and patient care errorsUses protective equipment appropriatelyPerform intubations and change tracheostomy tubes as assignedPractices good body mechanics, getting assistance as needed to protect patient and own safety

  • Alert and responsive to all alarms/call lights

  • Follows proper hand washing and infection control between patients and procedures

  • Perform testing in a manner that ensures accurate results.

  • Maintains a clean work area, checks and stocks supplies in their specific area.

  • Performs oxygen roundsPerforms accurate DAU and BAT testing as assigned.

  • Responds to all pages and requests in a timely manner

  • Perform home care instructions and arrange for home oxygen, nebulizer, and/or suction equipment

  • Responds to emergency situations, RRT calls and codes immediatelyAbility to remain calm and effective in emergency and/or stressful situationsEnsures patient safety in the hospital environment by following policy/procedures and adhering to National Patient Safety Goals

  • Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.

  • Performs patient bedside lab testing (ABGs) and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.

PERFORMS VENTILATOR MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE

  • Knowledgeable of all modes of ventilation and a weaning modalities

  • Responds promptly to urgent needsUses protective equipment appropriately

  • Actively participates in patient rounds with physicians if assigned

  • Performs ventilator checks every 2 hours and PRNSets appropriate ventilator alarms within recommended parameters

  • Ability to educate students and other health professionals about ventilator functions

  • Documents ventilator settings and patient information accurately

  • Patient advocate

  • Practices appropriate patient assessment skills to evaluate patient needs

  • Assertively contacts physicians to improve patient careActively contacts physicians concerning ventilator settings

  • Collaborates with appropriate healthcare worker concerning patient care issues

  • Regularly sets-up, verifies proper function, operates, and monitors ventilators,

BIPAP and CPAPMAINTAINS ACCURATE DOCUMENTATION AND ACCURATE COMPUTER ENTRY

  • Complete and concise documentation of all therapy, ventilator, and oxygen

  • Complete and concise documentation on all internal forms

  • Complete and accurate charge entry daily

  • Complete and accurate information on all ECGs

  • Perform editing of ECGs accurately when assigned

  • Accurate documentation on all diagnostic tests

ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS/HER ONGOING PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Learns the functions of all new equipmentLearns new proceduresKnowledgeable of departmental policies and procedures

Education:

  • Associate's Degree in a CoARC approved Respiratory Care Program is required.

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience in/with skills in respiratory therapy, ventilator management, electrocardiogram, oxygen administration and airway management.

  • A basic knowledge of Pulmonary and Cardiovascular anatomy and physiology is required.

License and Certification Additional Information:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).

  • Licensed by the State of Illinois (IDFPR) as a Respiratory Care Practitioner within 6 months of hire.

  • CPRCompletion of ACLS within 6 months of hire.

  • Completion of NRP within 6 months of hire (excludes PRN staff).

Computer Skills Basic computer knowledge:

  • Uses word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail application, and web browser.

  • Comfortable within a Windows OS and learning new applications.
