COBOL Programmer

job summary:

Assists Programmer Analyst in providing Information Services support by designing, implementing, and maintaining production programs to satisfy internal customers' requirements and requests. Works within team framework on a variety of area assignments. Prepares documentation, tests programs, maintains project records, and codes instructions to maintain current application programs.

responsibilities:

• Assists in making decision on what technology (mainframe/web/pc/etc.) to use for new development

• Provides user area backup support if Programmer Analyst is unavailable.

• Creates request for service forms (RFS) and obtains user department and Information Services management approval. Analyzes user request and recommends solutions.

• Works with Programmer Analyst to plan work to meet user department requirements and business objectives.

• Takes corrective action whenever planned work schedule cannot be achieved. Codes instructions for new online and batch application programs.

• Codes instructions to maintain and/or enhance current online and batch application programs.

• Maintains file layouts and copybooks as necessary to complete assigned tasks.

• Tests all new and revised computer systems. Reviews test with Programmer Analyst who assigned work.

• Coordinates changes to system documentation with I.S. Librarian.

• Determines and corrects cause of system malfunctions during day or night processing.

• Records activity and time allotments on project management system.

• Seeks opportunities to improve abilities, efficiency, and productivity through on-the-job training.
