Smithfield Hog Procurement Intern - Summer 2019 in Monmouth, Illinois

Overview

The Smithfield internship program offers students a paid opportunity to work in an environment that fosters real-life experiences, explores career options and applies your education. You will become a part of key management meetings and participate in meaningful projects. Our goal is to provide a working environment that not only encourages creativity, but offers equality, diversity, mutual respect and productivity. Our summer internships are typically 10 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • You will have exposure and the opportunity to broaden your skills through impactful work, mentored relationships, and will gain real world exposure to different disciplines on Smithfield's Hog Procurement team.

  • Learn the hog receiving duties, including identification, segregation, and documentation processes at the plant.

  • Maintain relationships with truck drivers and co-workers to ensure proper animal handling.

  • Participate in weekly Wednesday market calls, bi-weekly Procurement calls, and monthly Huddle meetings.

  • Assist in meat quality tests as the testing/internship overlap allows.

  • Spend time with supervisors in different departments of the plant, gaining a perspective on how departments work together.

  • The Procurement Department office is climate controlled. You will be exposed to current weather conditions as they affect the environment of the livestock facilities. Normal conditions that accompany a livestock harvesting facility should be expected.

  • Will spend time with live animals in a barn setting.

  • Agribusiness, AgEcon, Meat Science, Food Science, Animal Science or related major.

  • Must have completed your sophomore year in college.

  • Must be in good academic standing

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Willingness to learn and work in a team environment.

  • Proactive thinker and self-motivated.

  • Strong time, project, and organizational management skills.

  • The ability to work independently.
