Children's Home and Aid Therapist - Family Centered Counseling Services in Chicago, Illinois

Children’s Home & Aid’s Family Centered Counseling Services provide therapeutic intervention for children and parents involved in the child welfare system. These counseling services help improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families, support the academic achievement of children, and maximize the family’s overall well-being.

Children and families involved in Family Centered Counseling Services are typically referred to the program by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). As a Family Centered Counseling Services Therapist, you will provide clients with an individualized assessment, and then work collaboratively with the family and outside service providers to develop a comprehensive and strengths-based treatment plan. Therapy services address trauma, attachment, daily functioning, domestic violence, substance abuse, permanency, and court involvement. Therapists meet with clients at various office locations and work a flexible schedule that includes some evening hours. Therapist responsibilities include:

  • Provide individualized assessment, diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment planning for children and families.

  • Provide therapeutic interventions to address the needs of each child and family.

  • Monitor progress toward clients’ goals and objectives and make recommendations for ongoing services when necessary.

  • Coordinate services with other agencies, systems, and community providers to meet the needs of clients.

  • Work with Case Management to identify any needed community resources.

  • Develop aftercare service/treatment plans with the client and work with case management to ensure that any recommended services or providers are in place prior to client’s discharge.

  • Comply with Medicaid standards of practice and documentation.


  • Master’s degree in social work or related field.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

  • Licensure in candidate’s field (i.e. LCSW, LCPC) or ability to become licensed within 24 months of employment required.

  • Experience working with young children and their families required.

  • Child Parent Psychotherapy training or rostering a plus.

  • Domestic Violence Training or certification a plus.

  • Experience working with clients aged 0-5 and their families a plus.

  • Experience working with mandated adults with substance abuse, domestic violence, and mental health diagnosis a plus.

  • A valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation required.
