The Auto Club Group Supervisor, Club Service Fleet (Northern Region) in Chicago, Illinois

The Auto Club Group (ACG) provides membership, travel, insurance and financial services offerings to approximately 9 million members and customers across 11 states and 2 U.S. territories through the AAA, Meemic and Fremont brands. ACG belongs to the national AAA federation and is the second largest AAA club in North America.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (details of the basic job functions):

Supervises activities and personnel relative to the service vehicle and club fleet programs for an assigned shift

Interviews and recommends the hiring of personnel. Schedules work hours and assigns job duties. Trains personnel regarding policies, procedures and equipment operation. Evaluates employee work performance. Notifies management regarding member complaints concerning driver performance. Monitors fleet budget and approves related expenditures. Responsible for the repair and conversion of service vans and tow trucks. Supervises and participates in special automotive related events. Functions as service vehicle operator as required. Schedules fleet maintenance and repair. Maintains service vehicle supplies. Provides training for new tow truck and van drivers. Coordinates and recommends the revision/development of Club Fleet and Service Vehicle procedures. Conducts staff meetings to apprise employees regarding the implementation/revision of operating policies/procedures. Maintains daily statistics for reporting purposes and prepares reports for management review regarding reimbursement and Club tow truck/service vehicle activities.

Investigates, arbitrates and settles member/customer damage and service complaints.

Preferred Qualifications:

College level coursework in Business Administration or a related field.

Experience in:

  • Emergency road service

  • Fleet management

  • A supervisory capacity

  • Operating dispatching equipment

Knowledge of:

  • Automotive Services rules, restrictions and towing procedures

  • ACG mainframe systems

  • PC based D/2000 electronic call receiving & dispatch system

  • Company products, policies and procedures

Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, weekends and holidays.

Work Environment

Works in a temperature controlled office environment. Occasionally (up to 30% of work time) works as service van driver with exposure to road hazards and temperature extremes. Frequent (up to 50% of time) walking and standing. Occasional (up to 30% of work time) lifting, pulling and pushing.

Required Qualifications (these are the minimum requirements to qualify):

Possession of a valid State driver’s license.

Experience in:

  • Interacting with vendors, contractors

  • Preparing cost and expense reports

  • Assisting disabled vehicles and stranded motorists

  • Towing and minor automobile maintenance

  • Automotive fleet maintenance and repair

  • Resolving customer service/damage complaints

Knowledge of:

  • Towing procedures

  • Budget preparation techniques

  • Basic software packages (e.g. Word, Excel)

  • Service vehicles and related equipment used to provide emergency roadside assistance

Supervisory ability to include:

  • Scheduling

  • Staffing

  • Budgeting

  • Decision making

  • Analysis and problem solving

  • Evaluating employee work performance

  • Leadership

  • Coordinating and controlling major projects

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with others in a work environment and with the public (Police, service (towing) providers)

  • Demonstrate customer service skills

  • Convert vehicles to service vans and tow trucks in accordance with departmental specifications

  • Operate a two way radio/Nextel, digital dispatch system, cellular phone, emergency lighting and public address system (e.g. Starting systems, lock out tools, etc.)

  • Main accurate records

  • Prepare reports

  • Perform basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages

Written communication skills to include report preparation. (A writing sample may be required at time of interview).
