Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chica Psych Social Worker - Emergency Department - Contingency in Chicago, Illinois
The Psych Social Worker is a vital member of the patient care team who provides emergency psychiatric evaluations and disposition planning to patients presenting to the emergency department and provides essential social work support and protective service evaluations and resources to the emergency department and entire hospital.
This is a contingency (as needed) position which will provide coverage on rotating shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Assesses children and adolescents referred to the Emergency Department for behavioral and/or emotional problems, or children considered in distress by the medical and nursing staff in the Emergency Department.
Reviews all evaluations by phone with the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Resident On-Call.
Assists in the management of patients whose emotional or behavioral presentation in the Emergency Department is jeopardizing appropriate medical care.
Assists the Emergency Department staff when primary caregivers become so emotionally distressed or exhibit such poor behavioral controls that mental health professional intervention is considered necessary.
Reviews and triages all after hour psychiatric related phone calls.
Provides referrals for psychiatric services to patients evaluated in the Emergency Department.
Completes all aspects of psychiatric admissions, including insurance verification, precertification and information of patient rights.
Provides initial coverage to medical inpatients experiencing severe and acute emotional/behavioral problems, as available on evening shift.
Collaborates and provides clinical consultation as needed with team members across the continuum, including intra- and inter-departmentally within the Hospital setting.
Participates in rounds, treatment meetings, patient care conferences, staffing, multidisciplinary case conferences, etc.
Maintains clinical documentation in a thorough and timely manner adhering to Hospital and Departmental standards.
Master’s degree in social work from university approved by the council for social work education is required.
Current Illinois State Social Work licensure LCSW required.
Minimum of two (2) years of work experience or internship completion in a health care, child welfare or mental health setting is required. Experience working with children and families. Experience is emergency psychiatric assessment and triage strongly preferred. Experience in medical social work strongly preferred.
Ability to think proactively, acts creatively, and takes initiative appropriately. Excellent communication, critical-thinking, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work as a part of multiple teams.
Special physical requirements – sits and stands throughout the day. Physical management of patients in crisis situation may be necessary.
Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association required.
