This position is covered under theCity's collective bargaining agreement with American Federation of State,County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)- BARGAININGUNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5). Only employees in City jobtitles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid on this position.

DUTIES: Under supervision, charge and discharge library materials, collect fines fees, register and maintain database records. Renew materials and issue new library cards. Update and renew library cards. Respond to directional questions from patrons and assist with locating HOLDS in the Popular Library. Assist patrons using self-checkout machines. May be required to create, update or delete holdings records. Prepare materials to be moved through the library’s delivery system, including sorting materials received at the Harold Washington Library Center. Move bins of library materials throughout the Harold Washington Library Center. Prepare bins to be sent to branches. Operate the materials sorting machine. Retrieve materials from the book drop boxes. Unpack and discharge items received through the library’s delivery system. Attend workshops, meetings and training courses as needed. Perform related duties as assigned.

LOCATION: Harold Washington Library Center- Circulation 400 S. State Street

DAYS OFF: Two days off per week

SHIFT: Will be required to work some Evenings, Saturdays & Sundays

HOURS: 80 hours per month scheduled during normal unit hours

Mon-Thurs 9-9, Fri & Sat 9-5, Sun 12-5

THISPOSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications:

High school diploma orequivalency certificate (GED) plus six months of clerical library workexperience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

NOTE: Physical day today responsibilities for this title may include the ability to lift and carrylibrary materials. Ability to stand forextended or continuous periods of time.Ability to bend, stretch, twist or reach out with one’s body arms orlegs. Ability to climb staircases,ladders and or step stools.

VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE : The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering "yes" or "no" to the question on the online application that asks, "Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?" In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

(i) Experience working or volunteering for a public library

(ii.) Microsoft Office applications proficiency

(iii.) Experience in a position performing customer service and cashiering

(iv.) Experience preparing and processing new material for circulation

ResidencyRequirement: All employees of the Cityof Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of theCity of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
