Overview of the Position

The Hartford seeks energetic and passionate data science leaders to build and create best in class data science teams focused on industry leading modeling and analytic strategies. Our data science leaders play a significant role partnering with our businesses to better understand and improve the customer journey while evolving the team’s capabilities to further develop impactful products and drive successful outcomes. As a Director, you will play a significant role in partnering with business leaders and data teams to continuously improve decision-making across the Small Commercial line of business and every part of the customer lifecycle.

As a Director you will lead the development of analytic and predictive modeling solutions that feature engineering assets, experimental design, as well as modeling techniques and abilities. Solutions developed by this multi-faceted team will support a wide range of business areas which include underwriting, product, sales and actuarial. Our Data Scientist toolbox consists of but not limited to predictive Modeling Techniques, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, Unsupervised learning, and Augmented intelligence.

In Addition, our Directors set focus on insuring that the tactical implementation of solutions aligns with the strategic plan set by the leadership team. As a Director, you will support the long term plan to evolve the department’s capabilities to further develop and deliver impactful products to drive outcomes for both the business and clients.


  • Leverage expert knowledge of advanced analytics to develop, test, validate, and maintain robust solutions using supervised and / or unsupervised techniques.

  • Collaborate and partner with business stakeholders to establish a vision and create a culture which treats analytics as a corporate asset.

  • Review work with leadership and partners on an ongoing basis to calibrate deliverables against expectations.

  • Identify long term opportunities to improve the underwriting lifecycle through the creation of algorithms and machine learning techniques and achieve financial objectives.

  • Advance the departments capabilities by creating and deploying long term tools to continually evolve the practice of data science.

  • Identify and assess the value of new data sources and analytical techniques to ensure ongoing competitive advantage.

  • Develop strategies to achieve targeted business objectives. Implement these strategies and follow through to successful conclusion.

  • Present complex modeling to decision-makers that maximizes knowledge transfer and top- or bottom-line impact of modeling results.

  • Apply economic, quantitative, and statistical skills in the development of models to drive profitable growth and make sound business decisions.

  • Provide thought leadership, acting as an internal technical consultant to own department and business customers.

Experience & Skills

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Quantitative Economics or other similar analytical field

  • 7-10 years of relevant experience in Research Function in Insurance or Financial Services or related field.

  • Experience managing technical personnel in project based environment.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Expert subject matter expertise in data modeling

  • Strong strategic thinking and exceptional analytical capability

  • Strong verbal/written communication skills; Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels across the organization in small and large groups

  • Requires sophisticated business acumen in order to successfully translate complex technical topics into business solutions and strategies

  • Demonstrated track record of executing change to core business processes through the innovative use of quantitative techniques

  • Demonstrated project management experience

  • Advanced Python, R and/or SQL


  • Advanced negotiating, influencing, and conflict resolution skills at all organizational levels
