About Tax Oriented Investments

J. P. Morgan’s Tax Oriented Investments (TOI) group is part of the Corporate and Investment Bank,

based in Chicago, and responsible for investing the Firm’s own capital in tax advantaged earning assets

comprising alternative energy projects, equipment leases, and affordable housing investments. The

Energy Investments segment includes long-term investments in over 200 alternative energy projects

located around the U.S.

Description

The successful candidate will work within the Energy Investments Group of TOI which specializes in

renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, geothermal and other energy technologies. He/She will

be part of a dedicated engineering team advising originators, asset managers and senior management on

technical and valuation issues; including coordinating with clients/sponsors, outside consultants and law

firms in supporting the review, due diligence and documentation of new and existing TOI investments.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in project-level technical due diligence for new investments from bidding through

  • approval and closing stages.

  • Identify potential risk areas and key issues for additional review, and/or detailed analysis and

  • assessment and possible mitigation approaches.

  • Track transmission and power market issues and developments, including queue status in major

  • regions, transmission enhancement plans and status, and assist in developing regional outlooks.

  • Track emerging industry issues, developments and trends in technical areas relevant to the business

  • pipeline.

  • Provide input on 3rd party technical due diligence scope and oversee activities of outside technical

  • consultants.

  • Provide management, origination professionals, and asset managers with advice including definitive

  • research, asset evaluations, financial data and commentary for their use.

  • Inspect assets being considered for financing and assets associated with existing investments.

  • Prepare written technical reports and present the results of technical reviews to approval committees.

  • Assist asset management personnel in identifying, investigating and resolving equipment and

  • portfolio performance issues.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in engineering

  • 2+ years of relevant alternative energy, energy, transmission analyses or project finance experience

  • Ability to develop clear and concise analyses and presentations

  • Written and verbal communications skills - to translate and convey technical information to business

  • managers

  • Good judgment and business acumen

  • Computer skills – at a minimum Microsoft Office Suite

Additional Relevant Skills

  • Familiarity with transmission and congestion or energy market analyses

  • Previous experience with wind and/or solar power and exposure to other renewable technologies

  • (geothermal, biomass, etc.)

  • Computer programming

  • Statistics and stochastic modeling
