JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC is seeking a Senior Research Scientist for the Behavioral and Economic Analysis and Decision-making (BEAD) program in the Economics, Justice and Society department. As a member of the department's leadership, this person will work with colleagues in Bethesda and Chicago to conduct and expand our portfolio of work. Bring your expertise in household finance, consumer behavior, or behavioral science to this leadership role along with your passion for mentorship and collaboration.

Due to COVID-19, this position will initially be remote, but applicants will be based in our Chicago office when it is safe to resume office work.

DEPARTMENT:

The Economics, Justice and Society (EJS) Department focuses on a broad range of topics relating to critical economic and social issues. We are home to many of NORC’s largest and longest-running surveys, and we also engage in policy analysis and evaluation research relating to social programs and issues, the economy and the labor force, transportation and traffic safety, and crime and law enforcement. We work with a diverse set of clients and partners, including policy-makers and data users in national, state and local governments, academia, and the press.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead business development efforts to expand work in household finance and behavioral science by identifying growth opportunities and leading pursuit

  • Lead major multi-dimensional projects to support client research on time and on budget

  • Grow the BEAD team both through the development of current staff and the strategic recruitment of new professionals with capabilities that complement existing expertise within the department

  • Support a cohesive, team-oriented culture across a geographically dispersed staff and promote communication and integration among all members to foster collegiality and ongoing collaboration

  • Create, foster, and maintain strong client relationships by making connections, identifying business challenges/needs, and proactively offering constructive solutions

  • Develop and maintain key partnerships with leaders in associations, universities, foundations, and other organizations that will support and advance the success of EJS

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Masters’ degree, or Bachelor’s degree and equivalent experience in family/household economics, consumer behavior, economics, behavioral science, demography, social sciences, or another relevant discipline is required. Ph.D. a plus.

  • At least 9 years’ experience in positions of increasing responsibility in survey research, social science research, public policy or related field. Experience must include extensive project management and business development responsibilities.

  • Strong quantitative analysis/modeling skills, preferably using R or SAS.

  • Experience in client communications, financial management and relationship management

  • Successful record of securing high-caliber, compelling projects

  • A track record for hiring, managing and mentoring staff, and retaining a team of highly capable education professionals

  • Required Software Experience Strong proficiency with MS Office software; proficiency with statistical analysis (SAS or R) packages.
