HEAT TREAT OPERATOR A, 3RD SHIFT SUNDAY 11 p.m. - FRIDAY 7 a.m.GENERAL SUMMARY OF THE JOB

Independently sets up and operate any furnace(s) while maintaining quality standards to meet customer requirements. Independently makes all appropriate adjustments to Endothermic Gas Generators to produce correct atmosphere in any furnace at Belvidere. Process both thru-hardened and case hardened product consisting of any type of steel used in the production of our customers product. Continuous Improvement of processes and products are an ongoing function of this position.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains proper levels of machine efficiency and production level within areas of responsibility.

  • Amount of scrap, rework or mixed parts produced within areas of responsibility.

  • Efficiently fills in for furnace operators while producing quality parts. Qualified to start and to shut down all furnaces and all generators located at Belvidere.

  • Start furnaces when they are “cold”.

  • Start generators when they are “cold”.

  • Qualified to restart furnace and generators in the event of a power failure or other malfunction.

  • Qualified to put furnace and generators on “stand by” status for weekends or holidays.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of generator controls, valves and flowmeter.

  • Check and record generator dew point at prescribed intervals.

  • Make adjustments to generator to maintain required dew point.

  • Able to make necessary adjustments: New thermocouples, replacement of filter on furnace “air” blowers, cleaning of filters on quench systems, replacement of small hardware items and such general maintenance as can be done which does not require Maintenance Department personnel.

  • Qualified to make hardness tests and record readings.

  • Qualified to make determination of case depth and record readings.

  • Constantly on the alert for any variation in furnace operation and notify proper personnel: mechanical defects, tray overloading, “Burn-offs” out, and controls malfunctioning.

  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work area.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of all furnace controls, valves and flowmeter.

  • Make sure each furnace is operating at the temperatures indicated on record cards. This includes setting the temperature and checking them regularly during the run.

  • Make certain the required settings are made for proper gas and ammonia flow.

  • Record readings for furnace temperatures and flowmeter as required on proper flow.

  • Keep furnace records in order and filed as used: heat treat jobs as assigned on order boards, maintain stock of parts in front of each furnace, keep hoppers filled to supply steady flow of parts to each furnace, make sure trays are loaded at all times with enough parts to cause smooth and un-interrupted flow through the furnace. (No “dry” spots. No pile-ups).

  • Have thorough knowledge of tempering furnace operation.

  • Set temperature controls and observe time-at-heat requirements for each load.

  • Know part washers function and keep proper water level maintained.

  • Maintain correct level of quenching media in each furnace quench tank.

  • Replace quench filters as required for good operation.

  • Schedule tempering work in an orderly manner for efficient operation.

  • Accurately maintain job tickets and records.

  • Assist in minor repairs to equipment.

  • Enter necessary information into furnace recorders.

  • Maintain quench tack temperatures, circulation of quench and proper operation of heat exchanger.

  • Keep work area and equipment clean and orderly.

  • Observe hoist lifting capacity and its safe operation

  • Follows company safety rules and OSHA regulations, wears prescribed safety equipment in carrying out work assignments, and reports hazardous conditions to lead person or supervisor.

    EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Minimum 5 years experience in heat treat operations or a combination of a minimum of 5 years of formal metallurgical education and heat treat experience.

  • Required Hs Diploma/GED OR Relevant experience.

  • Fluent in English (both strong verbal and written communication skills).

  • Knowledge on basic SPC skills.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
