Our location in Abbott Park, IL, currently has an opportunity for a Supplier Diversity Specialist, Program Development in our Procurement division. The primary function of the Supplier Diversity Specialist, Program Development is to be responsible for executing against the supplier diversity and sustainability strategies developed by Senior Management. Work closely with internal customers, divisions and the Category managers driving the "One Abbott Procurement" model. Provide superior levels of customer service and satisfaction while adhering to a strict standard of business ethics and integrity. The Supplier Diversity Specialist, Program Development is responsible for promoting diverse suppliers and monitoring their usage across Abbott's divisions.

They will proactively seek and lead innovative ways to improve the procurement processes, cycle times, and customer service levels and be considered an SME across categories. Will develop a strong understanding of "One Procurement" category strategies and work on projects that impact the "One Procurement" team and identify areas of opportunity for new business opportunities with diverse suppliers, process improvement, and cost efficiencies. The Supplier Diversity Specialist, Program Development is recognized as an expert within own area. Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise. Act as a lead, coordinating work but may not be a supervisor.


  • First line responder; pivots between strategy and operations. Acts as a resource for colleagues and business partners.

  • Execute against larger category strategies and work in collaboration with strategic category leaders to increase spend with diverse suppliers

  • Research and evaluate products and diverse suppliers. Establish tools and processes to collect/track/summarize data; create reports and communicate status and results.

  • Recommend process improvements to streamline for efficiencies. Analyze complex problems and delivers solutions.

  • Maintain Supplier Diversity Intake process including supplier registration, handling correspondence and calls from suppliers as appropriate and educating suppliers on Abbott’s Supplier Diversity process.

  • Work with Category Managers and Procurement Operations to ensure diverse suppliers inclusion in tendering and sourcing. Assess compliance with Abbott's EHS and quality standards

  • Design and support reporting and KPIs

  • Educate on existing solutions and enable performance and tech tools development

  • Support and drive the implementation of Abbott's strategic 10-yr LRP for Supplier Diversity and Sustainability

  • Provide advice/direction in primary areas of expertise.

  • Communicate and educate appropriate departments to provide appropriate supporting documentation for purchases from diverse suppliers.

  • Collaborate with procurement teams and internal customers to drive awareness of opportunities through connections with diverse businesses.

  • Develop and leads agreed purchasing strategies for diverse suppliers

  • Seek, develop and establish business relationships with diverse suppliers

  • Meet regularly with divisional customers and lead functions to ensure superior customer satisfaction and continuous improvement for efficiencies.

  • Monitor and track diverse business spend opportunities by category Work closely with the master data integrity team.

  • Communicate and design messages to increase awareness and engagement, convey policies and best practices related to supplier diversity and sustainability. Serve as liaison to external organizations and conduct benchmarking studies.

  • Responsible for leading and mentoring Associate Specialist and Specialist procurement personnel. Provides guidance and training to Specialist.

  • Understand and apply cultural awareness with foreign business entities

  • Drive and grow strong effective business relationships with diverse suppliers, clients and customers.

  • Responsible to drive compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and procedures.

  • PO Spend up to $1,000,000



  • Bachelors Degree: Engineering, Science, Business, or Financial Degrees.

  • 4-6 years of or Procurement experience. Functional experience on supplier diversity programs.


  • CPM, CPSD certifications desired

  • Project management skills.

  • Excellent people skills

  • Excellent problem solving skills

  • Proficient in the use of spreadsheet programs

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Strong interdisciplinary, intercultural, influence, and networking skills

  • Ability to work as advocate for the function
